Many of our inventions are inspired from animals or insects around us. Like the four-legged robot which was inspired from cheetahs. And previously, scientists zombie-fied a spider to use the dead carcass of a spider to grab things. And now, scientists have discovered a new use for cockroaches.
Scientists in Japan have designed a new remote-controlled cockroach, equipped with a battery backpack that is powered by solar panels. Aka, cyborg cockroach. And these cyborgs will be used to enter hazardous areas, monitor the environment or undertake search and rescue missions without needing to be recharged. Not gonna lie, from the photos taken, the battery backpack looks heavy. But it works well. So how does it work? Well, the goal is to use these biobots with high resolution microphones to differentiate between sounds that matter, like people calling for help and from sounds that don’t matter, like a leaking pipe. And from there, rescuers will be able to determine the position of these victims and be able to plan a rescue with more precision and efficiency.
As much as we might be afraid of these creepy-crawlies, you can’t deny the importance that these roaches have done in the name of science.
