Subsequent reclamation works have turned the land
into an island.Today, the island is going to be transformed into a world-class
vacation destination – KK Resort City.

KTS Group is honoured to have the
Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Seri Panglima Shafie Apdal, to officiate at the
significant groundbreaking ceremony today.

Federal and State cabinet ministers,
deputy ministers, assistant ministers, members of parliaments, state
assemblymen, government officers and community leaders are also expected to
attend the event.

Home to the majestic Mount Kinabalu
and world-famous Sipadan Island, Sabah is undoubtedly a major tourism player in
Malaysia. Our rich natural heritage, wildlife attractions and abundant marine
life has earned the State a reputation as a tourism haven.

Kota Kinabalu, the state capital of
Sabah, is poised to become a port city with mega developments on the cards.
Coupled with the thriving tourism industry and robust business environment, the
future is bright for the Land Below the Wind.

Kota Kinabalu traces its beginnings
to 1881, as a tiny British settlement on Pulau Gaya, the biggest of the five
islands directly across the bay from present-day Kota Kinabalu city. In 1897,
rebel Mat Salleh and his men fought and burnt the island settlement. The
British relocated to the mainland at Kampung Gantisan, a small fishing village.
In 1899, the British named the new settlement ‘Jesselton’ after Sir Charles
Jessel, the vice chairman of the British North Borneo Chartered Company.
Jesselton was chosen due to its proximity to the North Borneo Railway and
24-foot deep natural port.

In 1942, Jesselton fell into the
hands of the Japanese. To liberate North Borneo from Japanese occupation during
World War II, Allied Forces bombed and completely destroyed Jesselton, leaving
only three colonial buildings standing, which now stands as the Sabah Tourism
Board building, the Atkinson Tower and the former Lands and Survey building. Unfortunately,
the latter was burnt down in a New Year’s Eve fire in 1992. The Sikh Temple,
located away from the town centre, was also spared from the bombing. The high
cost of rebuilding forced the Chartered Company to relinquish their land rights
over North Borneo to the British Government. North Borneo became a British
Crown Colony on July 15, 1946. At the same time, Jesselton was selected as the
new capital of North Borneo to replace Sandakan, which was also destroyed
during the war. (Source: Sabah Tourism Board)

In 1967, Jesselton was renamed as
Kota Kinabalu and elevated to city status in 2000.

Sabah’s tourism has grown by leaps
and bounds in recent years. Tourist arrivals have tripled from 1.1 million in
2002 to 3.6 million in 2017. Last year, some 3.88 million tourists visited the
State, bringing in RM8.3 billion in receipts.

Records last December further showed
that there were 125 direct flights weekly from China to Kota Kinabalu
International Airport (KKIA). It is expected that tourist arrivals to Sabah
will hit 11.8 million by 2032.

[3

post-207","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-3
["GET
